Where is Catawba Island?
Catawba Island is a quaint township extending off the picturesque shoreline of Lake Erie in beautiful Ottawa County, Ohio. Great location, rich history and tranquil surroundings are only a few reasons why it is home to more than 3,100 people, but many more visit each year.
Miles of beautiful shorelines with numerous boat launches and excellent fishing, exquisite locally-grown produce, peaceful nature reserves and state parks make Catawba Island a summertime paradise for many in Ohio's North Coast region and beyond.
Visitors to Catawba Island, near Port Clinton in Northwest Ohio, are often not aware of the beautiful and historic Catawba Cliffs area in the northwest portion of the island. A popular camping and picnic area before commercial development started in the 1920's, Catawba Cliffs was always where visitors came to take photographs.

In 1922, the original of this book, Legends of Catawba, was published by the developer and given to property buyers and prospective buyers. Published under the pseudonym of Henry W. Prescott, it is a collection of stories that first appeared in the Toledo Blade.
According to the Author, the historical facts in the stories are accurate. Where the facts end and the legends begin is unclear at best. But the stories present an important pictures of early life in the Catawba Cliffs area and the wider surroundings.

The pictures in the original book were photographs pasted in by hand. Some of the scenes in the pictures no longer exist because of the effects of both ice movement and development, but the beauty shown in the old pictures can still be seen in many parts of Catawba Cliffs today.
